European Battery Alliance welcomes €852 million in swift EU funding
The European Battery Alliance (EBA) welcomes the European Commission’s swift decision to award €852 million in funding to six battery cell manufacturing projects across Europe. This support, announced on 4 July, is part of the €1 billion IF24 Battery funding call aimed at boosting innovative EV battery production and advanced manufacturing capabilities (launched in December 2024 with applications closing in April 2025).
The EBA commends the European Commission for reducing the “time-to-money” period, ensuring funds reach projects more swiftly than before. The funding will support innovation in the production of EV battery cells and the deployment of innovative and sustainable manufacturing techniques, processes, and technologies. This is an important step to continue boosting the ramp up of battery cell manufacturing capacities in Europe..
This is part of a broader €3 billion EU initiative to strengthen Europe’s battery value chain and bolster resilience against global competition and supply chain vulnerabilities.
Congratulations to the selected projects that span France, Germany, Sweden, and Poland, and include:
- ACCEPT – Automotive Cells Company European Production Take-off (Automotive Cells Company (ACC), France)
- AGATHE – Advanced Gigafactory Aiming at Tempering greenhouse gases Emissions (Verkor, France)
- CF3_at_Scale – Scaling of innovative manufacturing processes for high-performance cells (Cellforce Group, Germany)
- NOVO One – NOVO One Gigafactory, located in Sweden (NOVO Energy, Sweden)
- WGF2G – Willstatt GigaFactory 2 GWh (Leclanché, Germany)
- 46inEU – Powering the Future – 46 Cylinders, Infinite Possibilities in Europe (LG Energy Solution, Poland)
Further dedicated production support needed
Despite recent progress, the European Battery Alliance (EBA) stresses that more targeted, production-focused support is urgently required to meet the immediate needs of EU-based battery cell manufacturers in the early stages of scaling up production.
In March 2025, the EU Automotive Action Plan acknowledged these challenges through its Battery Booster Package, which highlighted the critical need
for production support. €1.8 billion of the original 3 billion earmarked for the battery sector remains unallocated. The Alliance urges this funding to be directed through a dedicated EU-level instrument focused on supporting battery cell makers in the first years of operation.
Short-term, output-based support would help bridge the temporary competitiveness gap between European and international cell manufacturers. It would also unlock offtake agreements with EU carmakers to strengthen supply chains, boosting investor confidence, and ultimately securing a thriving and competitive battery ecosystem in Europe.
