The value chain approach may not be the norm in mature industries, but for a rapidly developing new industry this approach is essential.

To obtain the batteries needed, you have to ensure that they can be manufactured. This requires that battery cells are produced, which sets a demand for raw materials. And finally, to secure market acceptance, you must have a recycling process in place.

The mission of the European Battery Alliance is to ensure an unbroken value chain in Europe that can supply the market with all the batteries it needs – with the smallest environmental footprint possible.

The challenge is also multi-dimensional; technology, business models, supply chain, human capital, regulation and industrialisation are network nodes. In fact, they are meeting points as well as opportunities for innovative cooperation. And since all dimensions are interlinked, they can and should be addressed simultaneously.
