Raw Material Week Side Session
Welcome to our side event organised during the Raw Material Week on the topic “The missing middle: Why midstream materials hold the key to Europe’s circular and resilient Battery value chain” on Nov 19th, 08:00-10:00 CET
At Raw Materials Week, the European Battery Alliance is hosting a side session in Brussels to spotlight the often-overlooked midstream of the battery value chain: the critical stage that refines and processes raw materials into pCAM, CAM, and anode materials for cell manufacturing.
As Europe ramps up gigafactory construction, midstream capacity remains a critical bottleneck, lagging far behind projected demand and undermining Europe’s ability to build a fully integrated supply chain. By 2030–2035, European production of key battery materials will meet only a fraction of demand from EU cell manufacturers. Today, most cathode, anode, electrolyte, and separator materials are still sourced from outside Europe.
Without sufficient midstream processing, upstream extraction and refining projects lack local offtake, pushing valuable materials abroad for processing and weakening Europe’s value chain. Moreover, innovation in battery technology is closely tied to midstream – new materials and processes emerge where industrial production and R&D are co-located.
Strengthening Europe’s midstream and battery materials segment is therefore essential not only for supply chain resilience, but also for anchoring upstream investments, driving battery innovation, and enabling circularity, ensuring that recycled materials can re-enter European
This session brings together industry, sector experts and policymakers to explore solutions for closing the midstream gap and building a resilient, circular, and competitive European battery value chain.
Please note that registration is now closed as we have reached full capacity. Thank you for your interest.
