Lyten acquires Northvolt’s European assets: A vote of confidence in Europe’s battery industry

U.S.-based battery innovator Lyten has signed binding agreements to acquire all of Northvolt’s remaining European operations, including strategic sites in Sweden and Germany. The transaction ensures that vital industrial infrastructure – from gigafactories to R&D centres – remains active in Europe, at a time when securing regional battery production is more critical than ever.

The deal covers major facilities including Northvolt Ett and Expansion Ett in Skellefteå, the advanced Northvolt Labs in Västerås, the development-stage Northvolt Drei in Heide, as well as all remaining Northvolt intellectual property. Lyten plans to restart operations at the Swedish sites immediately following the transaction’s closing and has committed to rehiring a large share of the local workforce, while advancing Europe’s ambitions for low-carbon battery production.

Known for its lithium-sulphur battery technology, Lyten has already expanded into Europe through its recent acquisition of Northvolt’s facility in Gdańsk. With this new agreement, the company secures more than 30 GWh of capacity – both operational and under construction – plus infrastructure with the potential to scale beyond 100 GWh. Backed entirely by equity from private investors, the purchase also deepens Lyten’s integration into the European innovation and industrial ecosystem. Additionally, Lyten is in discussions to acquire Northvolt Six, a 15 GWh plant under construction in Québec, Canada, reinforcing its transatlantic ambitions.

From the European Battery Alliance perspective, this marks an important step forward for the battery value chain.

This acquisition brings new momentum into the European battery value chain. It sends a clear signal that Europe’s battery infrastructure remains highly strategic, despite recent headwinds in the industry.” said Emma Nehrenheim, Managing Director of EBA250. “It also builds on a long-standing tradition of transatlantic industrial cooperation. Lyten’s commitment to invest in European facilities, rehire local talent, and tap into the European innovation base where sustainability is a central priority is a clear show of intent. It is a vote of confidence in the battery value chain Europe has spent years building.

The inclusion of Northvolt Labs – regarded as one of the most advanced battery R&D centres in Europe – strengthens Lyten’s ability to innovate locally and complements Europe’s push toward clean, secure, and high-performance energy storage solutions.

In a press release issued yesterday, Lars Herlitz, Lyten Co-Founder and Chairman stated: “The combination of Northvolt’s world-class assets and Lyten’s breakthrough lithium-sulfur technology creates the right foundation for meeting energy storage needs across Europe and North America. We believe this transaction positions Europe as a leader in next-generation battery manufacturing, powered by clean energy and local expertise.”

Lyten’s CEO and Co-founder, Dan Cook, added that “[it] is a defining moment for Lyten”, using the acquisition to accelerate deployment of clean, locally sourced and manufactured batteries across both European and North American markets.

“The acquisition of Northvolt’s assets brings the facilities and Swedish talent to accelerate this mission by years, just at the moment when demand for Lyten lithium-sulfur batteries is growing exponentially to meet energy independence, national security, and AI data center needs,” Cook said.

The deal also preserves and strengthens industrial capabilities developed in Europe since 2017. As global competition intensifies, maintaining this infrastructure in Europe reach, and aligned with European values of sustainability, innovation, and clean energy, is essential.

At EBA250, we welcome this announcement as a positive milestone for the European battery industry, and a reminder of the strong foundation that continues to attract strategic investment and industrial leadership.
