The Global Annual Energy Meeting

EBA250 will participate at the Global Annual Energy Meeting 2022, focusing on the topic “Fit for 55:  Accelerating the Energy Transition and the Re-industrialization of Europe.”

Europe aims to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by mid-century. Fulfilling this ambition will involve transformations on every level, starting immediately. To that end, the European Commission proposed in 2021 the Fit for 55 legislative package: an extensive review of the Union’s climate and energy framework to enable the EU to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

At the 10th edition of the Global Annual Energy MeetingEsade’s Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics (EsadeGeo) will host, together with the Representation of the European Commission in Spain and EIT InnoEnergy, a series of events to explore the social, economic and geopolitical impacts of these policies, which will feature on the negotiating table in 2022.

The event is open to all, and you will find the registration links to the respective sessions below.

Event 1: Friday, January 28, 9:00 CET | Fit for 55: Accelerating the Energy Transition and the Re-industrialization of Europe

The series, called “Fit for 55: Accelerating the Energy Transition and the Re-Industrialization of Europe”, will delve into the internal and external implications of the EU’s Fit for 55 legislative package. Day 1 will feature keynotes speeches by Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice -President of the European Commission for the European Green Deal, and Teresa Ribera, Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

The keynote speeches will be followed by a panel of four top executives from Air Liquide Spain, Galp, Repsol and Siemens Gamesa discussing the impact of the Fit for 55 package on the EU’s industries.

Event 2: Tuesday, February 1, 16:00 CET | Derisking the Energy Transition: Energy Security Amid Traditional and New Risks

The second event in the series will focus on “Derisking the Energy Transition: Energy Security Amid Traditional and New Risks”. A panel of think tank, academic and industry experts-  including EBA250 representative – will discuss geopolitical, investment, market, industrial and employment risks and solutions related to the Fit for 55 package and the EU’s energy transition more generally.

What risks can be expected to arise in the context of the energy transition that is already in motion and will continue accelerating on the road to climate neutrality by 2050? How may the EU’s energy security be affected and indeed redefined, and what can be done to address this? What strategies is the EU already implementing to mitigate risks associated with the energy transition, and what further strategies can it consider?

Event 3: Thursday, February 3, 16:00 CET The External Dimension of Fit for 55: EU Global Leadership Through the CBAM?

The final session in the event series will focus on the EU’s proposed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its external effects. This session will bring together think tank and academic experts to discuss how the CBAM can act as an enabler for international climate cooperation.

Can the CBAM create incentives for exporters to adjust their practices and emulate EU policies? What impact will the tool have on developing countries and how does the CBAM rhyme with climate cooperation with the Global South, particularly in light of the UNFCCC negotiations? How can international coordination on border carbon adjustments be strengthened through international agreements or so-called “climate clubs”? These questions and others will be addressed during the session.
